WILLIAM WRIGHT (b. 1812 - d. 1886)
William WRIGHT was born in Holbeach, Lincolnshire in 1812 - the son of John WRIGHT.
On 15th May 1839 William married Jane BEESTON in Moulton. Jane had been born in Moulton in 1817 and was the daughter of James BEESTON and his wife Mary (GODWIN?). William and Jane settled on the Washway at Moulton Seas End close to Jane's widowed mother. Their first child, William, was baptised in Moulton on 7th April 1840.
Their second son James was born in 1842 and their first daughter, Hannah, was baptised in Moulton on 15th September 1844. Their daughter, Mary, was born in 1846, a son, John, was born in 1848 and a daughter, Sarah Jane, was born in 1851.
By this time William and his family had moved in with Jane's 76 year old mother and they were living on Roman Bank at Moulton Seas End. William was working as an agricultural labourer. Mary BEESTON died the following year and was buried in Moulton on 14th October 1852.
Their next daughter, Hannah, was baptised in Moulton on 13th November 1853 and their youngest daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1856.
In 1861 the family were still living at Roman Bank. Together with William and Jane were their children Mary (14) John (12), Sarah Jane (10), Martha (7) and Elizabeth (4). John was already doing farm work. His older brother, James, was nearby working as a carter for the farmer, Becuda COWLEY.
Ten years later all the children but Mary had left home. Their son, William, was now married and living in Sutterton. His wife, Sarah, had been born in Kirton and they had three children under the age of four. James was also married and he and his wife, Mary Ann from Wansford in Northampton, were living in Louth.
John and Martha were closer to home - both working for the baker and miller William TWELL(?). John was working as his apprentice while Martha was working as a domestic servant.
On 4th April 1873 Hannah married Robert BALDWIN, in Moulton. Robert had been born in Pinchbeck. The marriage was witnessed by her brother John and her sister Mary. When Mary married on 7th November 1876 to Luke ALLMAND, a mechanic from Dronfield in Derbyshire, Robert was one of the witnesses along with Mary's sister, Elizabeth. Neither of these marriages were to last long...
Robert and Hannah BALDWIN ran the Swan Inn where their daughter, Florence, was born and baptised in Moulton on 27th February 1877. Tragically Hannah died two years later and was buried 3rd April 1879. Soon after, the widowed Robert married his second wife, Mary Ann and had three more children.
Luke and Mary ALLMAND moved to Dronfield where their son Horace was born in 1878. Sadly Luke died two years later and was buried back in Moulton on 4th November 1880. After this Mary and her son returned to live with her parents at Roman Bank.
Earlier that year Sarah Jane had married the tailor George Thomas HURN on 1st June. George was the son of Thomas HURN, a farmer who had moved to Fengate in Moulton from Thorney in Cambridgeshire. After their marriage Sarah Jane and George ran the tailor's shop in Moulton close to the Swan Inn so, although they had no children of their own, they were able to see their niece, Florence BALDWIN regularly.
On 31st January 1878 John married Annie Eliza STUBBS in the Wesleyan Chapel in Louth. Their daughter, Helena Annie, was born in Louth on 30th June 1879. By the time of the 1881 census John, was a miller and had moved to Salfleetby where he lived with his wife and young daughter.
By now the family were rather spread out. James, his wife, Mary Ann, and their six children were living on Alexander Road in Louth where James was also working as a miller.
William and Sarah had moved from Sutterton and were now living at Dallington in Northampton. William was working as a labourer - as was his 13 year old son. His six daughters were all scholars - too young to go to work.
Martha and Elizabeth had both moved to Yorkshire. Martha was in Leeds working as a general domestic servant for the family of the ironmonger, Fred SHEARD who lived at Hanover Place.
On the night of the census Elizabeth was in New Wortley in Bramley where she was visiting the family of William HODGSON, a railway guard who came from Ludford in Lincolnshire. William lived on Carter Street with his wife and two children. Nearby, on Wallace Street lived John and Mary DIGBY from Norfolk. John also worked for the railways and probably knew William HODGSON. The DIGBYs had a boarder called Mark Andrew FRITH , a son of the farmer George FRITH from Fulstow in Lincolnshire and who was now working as a railway guard. Mark FRITH obviously knew Elizabeth WRIGHT and on 28th June 1882 they married in the Parish Church, New Wortley. The marriage was witnessed by William HODGSON and by Elizabeth's sister, Martha.
William WRIGHT died and was buried in Moulton on 13th April 1886 leaving his widow Jane living at Roman Bank with their widowed daughter Mary ALLMAND and grandson, Horace. Jane was able to receive parish relief and Mary found work as a seamstress. Nearby, Sarah Jane and George HURN were still living in the village.
By 1891 John and Annie WRIGHT were still living in Saltfleetby with three daughters. Mark and Elizabeth FRITH were still in Yorkshire living on Beech Wood Street in Calverley with Farsley with their three children, Arthur, Eva and Frank. At this time Mark was working as a railway shunter and they had a boarder, John Wright from Louth who was working at the iron foundry. He was the son of Elizabeth's brother, James. Later the family moved back to Lincolnshire and by 1909 they were living on Cranwell Street in Lincoln.
Jane WRIGHT died and was buried in Moulton on 2nd May 1898.
