THOMAS HAITH (b. 1803 - d. 1867)

Thomas HAITH was baptised in Tetney, Lincolnshire on 27th June 1803. He was the son of William HAITH and his wife Elizabeth PARKINSON - the sixth of eleven children born to the couple. Like his father, William had been a blacksmith and soon Thomas followed the family trade.

On 18th November 1830 Thomas married Jane FARROW in Tetney. Jane had been baptised in Great Limber on 31st January 1802 and was the daughter of Edward FARROW and Elizabeth KIRMOND who had married in Tetney on 16th June 1800. Their first daughter, Elizabeth, was baptised in Tetney on 16th January 1832.

Some time after this the family moved to nearby Fulstow. A second daughter, Maria Anna, was born in 1834. Their next daughter, Eliza Jane, was baptised here on 25th October in 1835 but was buried the following month. Maria was buried there on 10th April 1836.

When their next daughter was baptised on 13th July 1837 she was also called Eliza Jane. She was born deaf and dumb - as were the next two children. Sarah was baptised on 21st December 1838 and Charles Kirman HAITH was baptised on 17th March 1840.

At the time of the 1841 Census the family were living in Fulstow with children; Elizabeth (9), Eliza (4), Sarah (2) and Charles (1). Another daughter, Maria, was born the following month and baptised on 13th July 1831 but she died two weeks later. Their youngest son, William, was baptised on 19th July 1843.

By the time of the 1851 Census on 30th March Elizabeth and Eliza Jane had both left home but Thomas and Jane were still living in Fulstow with Sarah (12), Charles (11) and William (7). Nearby Elizabeth was working as a house servant for the farmer, John BOURNE, and his wife, Elizabeth.

Also in Fulstow was eighteen year old George FRITH who working as a farm labourer for John COCKING - a farmer of 243 acres from Ludford and on 17th May 1854 George FRITH married Elizabeth HAITH in the Wesleyan Chapel in Louth.

On the 1861 census for Fulstow we find Thomas and Jane HAITH living with their sons Charles (21) and William (17) who have both followed their father into the family trade of Blacksmith. Also in the household was their daughter, Sarah (22), and her daughter, Sarah Jane, who had been baptised in Fulstow on 24th January 1860. Nearby was Elizabeth and George FRITH with their children George (5), Mark (3) and Mary Ann (2).

On 15th March 1865 Sarah's daughter, Eliza Ann, was baptised in Fulstow. Sadly, her eldest daughter, Sarah Jane, was buried there on 24th August that year.

Thomas HAITH died and was buried in Fulstow on 30th July 1867. His wife Jane was buried there on 27th July 1870.

The 1871 census shows their son Charles HAITH (29) a farm labourer living with his unmarried sister Sarah (a housekeeper) and her two children Eliza (5) and George (3). Elizabeth (39) and George FRITH (a cottager and farm labourer) were living with their children Mark (14), Mary Ann (12), John (7) and Isaac (10 months). Eliza Jane HAITH was living in Broughton with her uncle John FARROW and his wife Elizabeth.

On the 1881 census George and Elizabeth FRITH are at home with their children Isaac (10), Betsy (9) and Arthur (5). Son John is nearby apprenticed to a wheelwright, Locking JANNEY. Charles and Sarah HAITH are still living together with Sarah's son, George. Eliza Jane HAITH, a dressmaker, is still living in Broughton with her (now widowed) aunt, Elizabeth FARROW.

On 14th November 1889 Charles HAITH married Ann MARSHALL in Fulstow. Ann was the daughter of their neighbour, Christopher MARSHALL and had been born in Fulstow in 1857. Like Charles, she was also deaf and dumb and she already had two children of her own - a daughter, Ann Elizabeth and a son, Christopher. The following year they had a son, Dick.

At the time of the 1891 census the family are still in the Fulstow area. George FRITH (58) is a farmer and lives with Elizabeth (59) and sons Isaac (20) and Arthur (15) who work with him. George's farm produced plenty of straw for animal feed which was chopped up in the yard using horse-drawn machinery and taken to market by wagon. Charles and Ann HAITH now live at Firebeacon between Fulstow and Grainthorpe with their three children. Eliza Jane HAITH still lives in Broughton with her elderly aunt Elizabeth FARROW.
