ROBERT BLACKSHAW (1791 - 1871)

Robert BLACKSHAW was baptised in Stubton, Lincolnshire on 31st October 1791. He was the eldest son of Robert BLACKSHAW and Sarah SNEATH who married in Caythorpe, Lincolnshire in 1791

After this the family moved to Claypole and Robert's brothers were all baptised here. Samuel, was baptised there in 1794 and on 17th August 1796 two brothers - Edward & John. The next child, baptised on 7th April 1799, was called Samuel - presumably following the death of his older brother and the youngest son, Thomas was baptised on 21st August 1803.

Robert, became a brick layer and stone mason. On 7th November 1815 he married Rebecca TWELVES in Navenby. Rebecca had been born in Navenby in 1788 and she and Robert settled there. Their first son, Samuel was baptised in 1817 but was buried just ten months later.

Their second son, Edward, was baptised on 15th April 1820. Two years later they had another son, Samuel, who died two months later.

On 16th April 1824 another son, Robert, was baptised in Navenby. A daughter, Hannah, was baptised on 9th September 1826 and their youngest child, Sarah, was baptised there on 29th July 1829.

Robert's father had died some time before 1823 and his widow, Sarah, remarried to James OGDEN in Claypole on 4th August. She was widowed again before 1841 when the census shows her still living in Claypole along with her youngest son, Thomas BLACKSHAW.

In 1841 the family of Robert and Rebecca were all living in Navenby. Robert was working as a mason and living at home with them were both sons and their youngest daughter, Sarah. Hannah was working nearby in the household of Rebecca ASHLING. Also there was a dressmaker called Rebecca BOLTON from Donnington. A few months later, on 18th October, Rebecca BOLTON married Hannah's brother, Edward BLACKSHAW. Their first child, Eliza, was baptised on 15th January 1843 and was the first of eleven children.

Hannah herself married George CLARKE on 1st September 1846 and their first child, Robert Mason CLARKE was baptised on 18th Oct 1847. He was also the first of eleven children

Robert BLACKSHAW (son of Robert & Rebecca) married in Navenby on 24th February 1848 to Ann CARRINGTON. Their daughter, Ann Carrington BLACKSHAW was baptised on 12th July 1848 but the mother was buried just three days later. Robert, a bricklayer, lodged in the household of the joiner, Charles ROBINSON. The child went to live with her widowed grandmother, Ann BREWARD but sadly died as a child and was buried in Navenby on 15th October 1858.

In 1851 most of the family were still living in Navenby. Robert and Rebecca were living on the High Street where Robert worked as a bricklayer and mason. Their younger daughter, Sarah, was still living at home and was working as a dressmaker. George and Hannah CLARKE were also living on the High Street. George was working as a journeyman wheelwright and they had two sons, Robert Mason and George.

Edward and Rebecca BLACKSHAW were living nearby on Stone Pit Lane with five of their children. Edward had become a master mason and had as his apprentice young John BOLTON who was almost certainly a relative of Rebecca.

Robert's mother,Sarah (SNAITH BLACKSHAW) OGDEN died and was eventually buried in Claypole on 11th August 1853 having lived with her son, Thomas, for many years

On 18th October 1853 Sarah BLACKSHAW married James LEAKE and their son, James, was born about four years later.

By 1857 George CLARKE had grown tired of his work as a wheelwright and joiner and instead became an innkeeper. By 1861 George and Hannah were running the Reindeer Inn public house in Navenby. George was a licensed brewer and Hannah was also working as a dresmaker. At this time the family had six children and employed a 'maid of all work' called Letitia HARRISON.

By 1861 Robert had retired from his work as a bricklayer. He and Rebecca were sharing their home with their daughter, Sarah LEAKE (now widowed) and her young son, James.

Edward and Rebecca BLACKSHAW were living nearby seven of their children. Their eldest son, John Edward, was working as a bricklayer in Waddington and living in the household of Charles JOHNSON. On 4th September 1865 their eldest daughter, Eliza, married the widower, Amos COOKE who already had two children from his first marriage. By 1871 they had settled in Navenby on Grantham Row.

In 1871 Robert and Rebecca BLACKSHAW were living alone. Their daughter, Sarah had remarried to the shoemaker, Edward HOYES, and by now they had four more children.

George and Hannah CLARKE had moved to St Botolph in Lincoln where they were living at 19 Ripon Street. George was back to working as a carpenter. They had ten children living at home - plus Hannah's nephew, Robert BLACKSHAW, a son of Edward and Rebecca.

Edward & Rebecca were still living in Navenby with three of their daughters, Hannah, Rebecca and Jane. Two more of their of daughters, Sarah & Susannah, were working as domestic servants in the home of John FOSTER at St Mary Le Wigford.

Robert BLACKSHAW was buried in Navenby on 20th December 1871 while Rebecca was buried there on 24th August 1873. Nevertheless, the family remained in Navenby. By 1881 George & Hannah CLARKE had returned and were now running the Kings Head public house. Five of their children still lived at home but their son, George, was running a rival establishement in the form of the Butchers Arms Inn. Hannah CLARKE was buried in Navenby on 20th November 1900.

By 1881 Edward & Rebecca BLACKSHAW were living at 21 High street with their daughter, Susannah. Edward was buried there on 8th April 1882 and Rebecca on 10th September 1884. Their son John had moved to Doncaster in Yorkshire where he was living with his wife, Mary Ann and four children. Two more of their sons, George and Samuel were living in Newark, Nottinghamshire with their wives and families. Samuel had married Sarah DAINES and they were awaiting the birth of their third child. Daughter Rebecca married Thomas Mitchell WRIGHT and they settled in Navenby. Hannah married John Percival WARWICK and settled in Kirton in Lindsey. Jane married Samuel Mason KNIGHT.

Sarah settled in Navenby with her husband Edward HOYES. Her son, James LEAKE, followed his stepfather to become a shoemaker and settled there with his wife Eliza and daughter Sarah.

Ten years later, descendants of the BLACKSHAW family were still living in Navenby. George and Hannah CLARKE were living on Church Lane with their unmarried son, George while another son, Edward Blackshaw CLARKE, was the proprietor of the Reindeer Inn on the High Street where he lived with his wife, Fanny, and seven of their children. Nearby, a daughter, Hannah, was living with her husband, John HOLMES and in St Nicholas, Lincoln, daughter Rebecca was living with her Irish husband, William James HEALEY and six of their children.

Edward and Sarah HOYES were living on the High St with their son, Charles - while Sarah's son, James LEAKE lived nearby with his wife and daughter.

The Descendants of Edward and Rebecca BLACKSHAW were spread more widely. Daughter Hannah and John Percival WARWICK and they were living in Hibaldstow with five of their children. Son Samuel was still living in Newark, Nottinghamshire. He was now widowed and lived with his two eldest children while the younger children were living with members of the DAINES family.
