LUKE HOLLAND (1803-1880)
Luke Holland was baptised in Warnham, Sussex on 10th July 1803. He was the son of Luke HOLLAND and his wife Sarah TANNER of Wooton in Surrey who had married in Warnham on 12th October 1801.
Luke married Hannah WHITINGTON in Itchingfield on 1st October 1836. She was born in Rudgwick in 1811 - probably the daughter of James WHITINGTON and Mary GREVAT. Their first child, Sarah, was baptised in Itchingfield on the 8th January 1837 while their second daughter, Hannah, was baptised there on the 25th March 1839. Also living with them was a young girl, Mary WHITLINGTON who was seven years old.
By census night, 7th June 1841, the family contained their first son, George, who was baptised in Itchingfield just six days later. At this time, Luke's father was living at Farthing Cottage in Slinfold with his second wife, Ann ATTWATER and his younger son, George, who had been baptised in Abinger on 25th February 1815.
Over the next few years Luke and Hannah added to their family in Itchingfield. Emily was baptised 2nd April 1843 and their second son, Philip, was baptised 7th June 1846.
Luke's father died and was buried in Itchingfield on 15th February 1849. On 1st April that same year his daughter Maria was baptised.
By 1851 Luke and his family had moved into his father's old cottage in Slinfold which they shared with Luke's brother, George. Their oldest daughter, Sarah, had left home by this time and may have been working as a general servant at Cootes Farm in Horsham in the household of Henry NALDRETT and his family.
On 17th July 1852 their son Luke was born and was baptised in Slinfold on 10th August. Their family was completed three years later with the baptism of their youngest child Harriet in Slinfold on 15th May 1855. Hannah died the same year leaving Luke to look after the family.
On 22nd September 1860 his daughter Sarah married the carpenter William KILLNER in Southwater church. William was the son of John KILLNER and his wife Ann PENFOLD who had married in Horsham on 9th June 1824. The marriage was witnessed by Sarah's sister, Hannah and by their neighbour and close friend, Matthew FREEMAN. By this time Hannah already had a son of her own - Edward HOLLAND baptised in Slinfold on 11th December 1859.
By the following year Luke was still living at Farthing Cottage with his daughter Hannah (22), his sons George (19) and Luke (9) and his young grandson, Edward. His other son, Philip (13), was living in Southwater with his married sister Sarah KILLNER, her husband William and their baby son, William George, who had been baptised on 3rd February.
On 4th October 1862 his daughter Hannah married their neighbour Matthew FREEMAN in Slinfold. Matthew was the son of Richard FREEMAN and his wife Ann, had been born in Slinfold around 1843. He and Hannah settled in Slinfold and their daughter, Rosina, was baptised there on 14th February 1864.
By 1871 Luke and his unmarried son George were living in a household headed by his daughter Hannah FREEMAN and including her two children. Her husband Matthew, a bricklayer, was presumably working away from home. Nearby her youngest brother, Luke, was working as a servant for the farmer, Edward CHARMAN and his family at Rowadams Farm. Sarah and William KILLNER were living at Worthing Street near Southwater with their four children; William (10), Harry (7), Emma (5) and Frederick (4 months).
Luke HOLLAND died and was buried in Slinfold on 12th December 1880.
By the following year his family were spread out across the south of England. Hannah and Matthew FREEMAN remained alone in Slinfold while their daughter, Rosina, worked at Court Farm in Ifield as a housemaid for the family of William WOOD. Also in Slinfold was Hannah's brother Luke who was a lodger in the household of George JENKINS at Ashland Cottage.
Sarah and William KILLNER were now living in Nuthurst with their five sons; William (20) and Harry (17) were both carpenters like their father, Frederick Edward 10, Ernest Alfred (8) and John Charles (4). Their daughter Emma, was nearby working as a domestic servant for the farmer John LUCAS at Allice Lands.
Further away was George HOLLAND, now 38 but still unmarried. He was in Battersea in Surrey where he was working as a plate-layer and lodging in the household of William DUFFIELD - also from Slinfold. Meanwhile his brother Philip was now married and living with his wife, Ann, and their four children in East Ham in Essex where he was working on the Docks.
Ten years later Hannah and Matthew FREEMAN were still living in Slinfold together with their eight year old granddaughter, May. Luke HOLLAND was still in Slinfold - sharing a house with his brother George (still unmarried but now returned to Slinfold) and their lodger, Maurice STEMP, a young errand boy.
Sarah KILLNER, now widowed, was living at Farthing Hill in Warnham with three of her sons .Emma was living at Little Millifields in Rudgwick where she was working as a shop assistant. Ernest and Frederick had left home and in time would arrive in Bracebridge in Lincolnshire where they would finally settle.
By 1901 Luke HOLLAND was living alone in Slinfold in a house on Park Street.
Sarah and Emma KILLNER had moved to Shamley Green near Wonersh in Surrey. Here they lived at the General Stores at Lordshill in a household headed by Jacob EARLE and which included George REEVES. Emma was working as a grocery assistant while Sarah was the housekeeper. They were still living here when Sarah died on 27th May 1907.
