JOHN BLACKSHAW (1796 - 1867)

John BLACKSHAW was baptised in Claypole, Lincolnshire on 17th August 1796 - the same day as his brother, Edward. He was the son of Robert BLACKSHAW and Sarah SNEATH who had married in Caythorpe, Lincolnshire in 1791. Their first child, Robert, was baptised in Stubton on 31st October that year.

After this the family moved to Claypole and the remaining brothers were all baptised here. Samuel, was baptised there in 1794 and on 7th April 1799, a second son called Samuel - presumably following the death of his older brother. The youngest son, Thomas was baptised on 21st August 1803.

On 20th August 1820, John married in Lenton/Lavington to Sarah WARRENER. Sarah was the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth WARRENER and had been baptised there on 10th July 1801. The marriage was witnessed by John and Mary BRIGGS.

Their first son, Robert, was baptised in Lenton on 26th August 1821 and his brother, Joseph, was baptised there on 10th May 1823.

John's father had died some time before 1823 and his widow, Sarah, remarried to James OGDEN in Claypole on 4th August. She was widowed again before 1841 when the census shows her still living in Claypole along with her youngest son, Thomas BLACKSHAW.

John himself was widowed when Sarah died and was buried on 28th April 1826. John did not re-marry and in 1841 he was living alone in Lenton where he worked as a farm labourer. His son, Robert, was possibly working for the farmer Richard GRANTHAM in Scott Willoughby, Lincolnshire.

On 27th June 1843 Joseph BLACKSHAW married Rosetta MEASURES in the parish of Swinstead. Rosetta was the daughter of John MEASURES and his wife, Maria TOREY and had been baptised in Swinstead on 29th August 1825. Their first son, John, was baptised in Lenton on the 30th September while their second son, Robert, was born about 1846.

Robert married in 1848 in the district of Sleaford to Mary Ann. They settled in Aslackby and their first child, John, was baptised there in 1849. In the parish register the child's mother is called Rosetta. Sadly the child was buried there just four months later.

In 1851 Robert and his wife (Ann on the census) were still in Aslackby. By now they had a baby daughter, Mary Ann. John was still living in Lenton with his son, Joseph, with wife, Rosetta and their children - John (baptised Charles) and Robert. By now they had a baby daughter, Maria, who had been baptised on the 16th February.

On 6th July 1853 John's grandson, Robert, was buried in Lenton. His mother, Sarah (SNAITH BLACKSHAW) OGDEN, died that same year and was buried in Claypole on 11th August having lived with her son, Thomas, for many years

Robert and Mary Ann remained in Aslackby until 1861 and had five more children there - including a son, Charles, baptised 5th February 1854 and a daughter, Fanny, who was baptised on 14th October 1860.

On 6th April 1861 (the day before Census Night) the family moved from Aslackby to Ingoldsby. John was still in nearby Lenton living with his son, Joseph, and grandchildren, John and Maria. Joseph's wife, Rosetta, was working as a charwoman in the household of a farmer, Mary RUSKIN.

Robert and Mary Ann moved back to Lenton and their daughter, Rosetta, was baptised there on 23rd January 1863. They went on to have three more daughters in Lenton - including Lucy who was baptised on 14th July 1867. John BLACKSHAW died that year and was buried in Lenton on 8th February 1867.

By 1871 his sons Joseph and Robert were both living on Church Street in Lenton. Joseph lived with his wife, Rosetta, and his unmarried daughter, Maria, who was working as a dressmaker. Their son, John, had married his wife, Ann, in 1867 and they lived with their baby daughter, Mary Elizabeth, in Pickworth. Sadly, John died the following year and Ann remarried to Joseph STEEL with whom she settled in Donington.

Robert's family was, by now, quite large and starting to spread out. At home were their son, Thomas, and daughters; Sarah, Fanny, Rosetta, Annie, Lucy and Elizabeth. Another daughter, Betsy Ann, lived at the Vicarage where she worked as a housemaid for the Vicar, Thomas HEATHCOTE. Their oldest daughter, Mary Ann was working as a servant in Ingoldby for the farmer, John Alfred SMITH and his family. Son, John, was working in Bottesford as a farm servant for the farmer, George LORD.

Their youngest son, Joseph Frederick, was born three years later and was baptised on 16th August 1874.

By 1881 Joseph and Rosetta were living alone. Robert and Mary Ann had only four of their children still at home; Thomas, Lucy, Elizabeth and Frederick. They also had two grandchildren: these were four year old George with two year old Margaret Ann. Margaret was the daughter of Fanny and had been baptised in Lenton on 18th July 1879. Their daughter Annie was now working for Reverand HEATHCOTE. Mary Ann was living in Buckminster in Leicestershire where she worked as a domestic servant for Elizabeth HACK.

Their son John was living on Four Pigeons Road in Thorney in Cambridgeshire with his wife Mary Ann CLAY with their three young children. Two more children were born in the next few years. The youngest child was born in 1889 but Mary Ann died soon after. In 1891 the household included Mary Ann's widowed mother who was working as their housekeeper.

In 1891 Joseph and Rosetta were living on Main Street while Robert and his family had moved to 2 Ingoldeby Road. Their daughter Lucy had married 1st January 1889 to John Thomas ASLIN and was living on Keiby Road with their two young children. Joseph Frederick was living at Heath Farm in Welby where he worked for Richard WELLS.

Robert BLACKSHAW died in 1899 and was buried in Lenton on the 10th August. His wife, Mary Ann, had died three years earlier and was buried on the 27th June.
